Replacing a drive without breaking parity

Featured Replies

Hi there

I want to upgrade 3 array data drives (4TB > 20TB). I have a single parity setup with 7 array drives (7+1). Parity and 1 array drive have already been upgraded to 20TB drives at an earlier date. The previous array data disk replacement was done by rebuilding and took about 32hours. To replace 3 more drives this way I would be unprotected for ~4days which seems too risky while adding new hardware to the mix.

In the release notes for 7.0.0 I read about a new mover function https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/release-notes/7.0.0/#using-mover-to-empty-an-array-disk. I think I can use this (maybe faster than Unbalance) to empty one of the 4TB drives and then I think I should follow the process for removing a drive while keeping parity valid (https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/manual/storage-management/#alternative-method). Then add a new 20TB drive and either preclear or wait for automatic clear to complete before repeating the process for each subsequent drive replacement.

Does this make sense and is there any other approach I should consider before I begin?

Cheers

Just stumbling across this now through a google search. Did the above steps work?

That will work, but take longer than a normal replacement.
