Rsync destination Twice The Size of Source (Synology to Unraid)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a Synology SMB mounted to my new unraid server (I’m new to Unraid).

I previously transferred over my movies & tv shows (35tb) not using Rsync, and just did it through my PC which actually went pretty good. (Synology->PC->Unraid).  I let the transfer go since it went pretty well speed wise.

I got around to setting up Rsync (from Synology to Unraid) this past week & doing a check to make sure files are syncing correctly & everything made it on to Unraid server. What has happened though, is as the files land on the Unraid server. I’ve notice some of my TV shows file sizes have increased a little bit. So what 35tb of files has now ballooned to 68tb on the Unraid server & Rsync has errored out (no free space). I do have another hard drive I can put in to finish since the Rsync transfer was very close to being finished.

I’d like to get my file size to go back down to the 35tb it should be at. I’ve read that once Rsync finishes up, the actual file size will shrink back down (not sure how true that is)? I’ve also read it could be a sparse problem, & Unraid pre-allocating space for the transfer.

My end goal is once everything looks good on the Unraid server I’ll start syncing to the Synology and use my Unraid server as the main server with Synology now being the backup.

Im fairly new to doing command line etc, but would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

That doesn't make sense, you likely duplicated some (or all) files, looks for dupes.

I’ll be looking closer at it in the next day or so, I didn’t have much time before work this morning. But when I looked at some files earlier in the week, I didn’t see duplicates, just my file sizes were bigger. I’ll check for dupes this weekend. Hopefully it’s just that I guess.

Were the files compressed on the Synology server?

I believe I have my issue figured out. (of course, own doing lol). After doing the initial transfer, I  setup Rsync and didn't realize I screwed up on the target, so it created another folder & duped. I finished my movie transfer overnight, which went correctly.

I did notice that Windows 11 shows Unraid with 1 extra folder, but correct amount of files. Windows properties size matches between Synology & Unraid. Size on disk is slightly different. But that's to be expected I believe. Unraid showing an extra folder; must be a system folder etc? TV shows are transferring now so it will be a good 1-2 days or more to finish. But thinking all is good. Watching Spacinvader1's youtube video on Rsync got me thinking I missed something.

I had setup:

 Media/TV Shows" "/mnt/user0/Media/TV Shows"

instead of:

Media/TV Shows/" "/mnt/user0/Media/TV Shows"

Thanks for the help everyone. Much appreciated!
