Upgrading...to which version?

Featured Replies

Hi.  I want to upgrade my server in order to get user security.  I'm currently on version 4.0 beta 10.  Which version do I need?  What is the easiest way to upgrade.  Thanks in advance.

Take a look at the Downloads page:  http://lime-technology.com/dnlds/.

You should use the latest official release, v4.2.4, or the latest beta version, v4.3-beta6.  Both are in wide use, and it depends on your personal feelings about betas, and how a beta fits into your data management policies.  If stability is vital, and you depend on unRAID for all backups, then you should not use the beta.

in fact it should be out, last week :P

Will there be any significant changes? I was going to build my unraid server next weekend... guess I might as well wait a little longer and start with 4.3 final instead.

As far as we know, the current beta will be the final version.  Even if it is not, and Tom adds something critical to you, to upgrade from 4.3beta6 to any subsequent version you only need to download and unzip the newer distribution on your PC, extract two files (bzroot and bzimage), and put them on the flash drive and then re-boot the unRaid server.  It takes just minutes and can be entirely from file-explorer in windows.  You do not need to re-format the flash drive again, or make it bootable again... you only need do those tasks once, and you might as well do it now and not wait.

4.3beta6 is very stable and should become 4.3final any day now.

I don't know if you have info that I don't, but I know of at least one fix that is in the final (over b6), so I don't expect b6 to BE the release version.

That aside, indeed it is very easy to upgrade Chriz, as Joe wrote, it is a 5 minute job (prob. less).

Even if nothing else, the "4.3-beta6" at the top of the http GUI will have to change.

The instructions below discuss how to upgrade from 4.0.  However, I'm running the beta 10 version of 4.0.  Guess I need to see if there were any changes between 4.0 beta 10 and 4.0 RTM (or if they would already be incorporated in the files below).

If you are currently running unRAID server 4.0 or 4.1, please copy the following files from the new release to the root of your Flash device:

    bzimage

    bzroot

    syslinux.cfg

    menu.c32

    memtest

If you already have menu.c32 and memtest on your flash drive the only two files you need to upgrade to any of the subsequent releases all the way to the current 4.3-beta6 are the bzroot and bzimage files.  syslinux.cfg, memtest, and menu.c32 have not changed.

You can simply rename the two existing files to on your flash drive to bzroot40 and bzimage40, from bzroot and bzimage, and then copy the two new files from the new  release (bzroot and bzimage) onto the flash drive and you will be able to reboot.

You can do everything remotely from your windows file-explorer as long as you make your flash drive visible on your network as read/write.  As I said, rename the existing files (just in case you want to revert back to 4.0 for some reason, you can put them back to their old names) Then, copy the two new files from the folder where you unzipped the new release of unraid, then using the web-interface to the management page, stop the array and then use the "reboot" button on the web-interface.

It probably took me longer to write this than it might take you to actually do the upgrade. (I don't type that fast)
