  1. Hi, I haven't used my server in a few months and after booting today, there were lots of different errors (see log). The array is currently stopped ("Upgrading parity") although I haven't changed the parity disk. Since I'm not really using the server anymore, I'd just like to access the data on the array and maybe find out which disks are failing. Server specs: unRAID Server Pro 4.7 Asus P5B-E PLUS Intel Celeron 430 1GB PC800 RAM 550W PSU 11 samsung drives Digitus DS-30104 PCIe Sata Controller Thanks for any help syslog-2013-04-29.txt
  2. I installed a new PSU and the server is starting again. unraid is also booting fine but the onboard LAN adapter isn't working. it's definitely enabled in the bios but there is no active LED and the network switch isn't getting any connection... should I just get a new NIC instead?
  3. it's no use. even with the new mainboard, the system won't start. so it has to be the PSU...
  4. My UnRAID server has been running without any major problems for over 2 years... until today. The server must have shut down at some point and now it won't even power up. A mainboard LED keeps flashing like crazy (can't find anything in the manual) and even after disconnecting everything else and resetting the CMOS, it simply won't start. specs: Asus P5B-E PLUS Intel Celeron 430 1GB PC800 RAM 550W PSU 10 samsung drives Digitus DS-30104 PCIe Sata Controller I still have a Gigabyte P35 DS3R lying around, is there anything I should know when replacing the mainboard? My data should still be safe, right? If that doesn't work, maybe it's the PSU...
  5. The same could be said about mine. Functionality > looks. And it's ultra silent when spun down. after the upgrade: Chieftec Big Tower Bravo LBX-01 2 x Coolermaster Stacker 4-3 modules (slightly modified) Bequiet 500W PSU Asus P5b-E Plus Celeron 430 1,8Ghz 1GB RAM Digitus aka Rosewill PCI-E 6x SATA 4 TB + parity - all Samsung running Unraid 4.4.2. The fans were actually running @7V when I took the picture. Cable management has never been one of my strong suits. still plenty of space left new 4x PCI-E controller card There are also two onboard sata ports (one of them being esata) that support port multipliers. So even if I do run out of space some day, I could still come up with an "external" upgrade of some kind. Addonics, anyone?
  6. Anyone? If someone took the time to write a short guide, we could add it to the wiki as well. This is the #1 issue that's bothering me and I'm sure it will only get worse once I add more drives.
  7. I've tried to read up on that "ls -R trick" but there seem to be different scripts out there and I wouldn't know what I'm doing... Most of my disks spin up when browsing through user shares and it's really starting to annoy me. Today I installed a cash drive hoping that I could reduce the number of spin-ups that way but it only works when I copy the files directly to the cache drive. I only have 1GB ram installed but I wouldn't mind adding more if it actually helped with the spin-ups. It would really help if one of the experts here could provide a simple step-by-step tutorial for n00bs like me. Thanks in advance!
  8. Sounds great. Now, just use the package-manager button to "Enable Re-Install on Re-Boot" on the c++ library package, and the library will automatically be installed every time you reboot the server, and smartctl will continue to work. I tried that but it won't install the package on its own after a reboot. I still have to use the package manager for that, although it says "Currently Installed. Will be automatically Re-Installed upon Re-Boot." Any ideas? Thanks!

    Adaptec 1430SA

I'm thinking about getting one of these as well... On http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/Controllers/Hardware/sata/entry/AAR-1430SA/index.htm it says "48-bit LBA support for drives above 137GB" though. Shouldn't it be 64bit in order to support even bigger disks (1-2TB)? Most HighPoint cards seem to offer 64bit LBA...
  10. Thanks a lot, that was easier than I expected! My drives appear to be fine except for one "calibration_retry_count=1" issue which shouldn't be that serious...
  11. Yesterday I upgraded to unraid 4.4.2 and decided to give unmenu a try as well. There are a few things I can't get working however. The Smart tests don't seem to be doing anything: when I select a drive on the Array Disk Management page for a "short smart test" it just says "Smart Short Test of /dev/sdd will take from several minutes to an hour or more." and nothing else happens. the smart statistics say nothing except "Statistics for /dev/sdd SAMSUNG_HD501LJ_S0MUJ13P799098". I then tried it manually by entering smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sdd in telnet and it gave me the following error: "error while loading shared libraries: libstcd++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directoy. (In case you haven't noticed by now: I don't know a single thing about linux.) The smart page under "MyMain" is also empty (see attached image). When I click on "sm" on the right it opens a new unmenu window in the browser which simply says "smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sdb (disk1)". I then tried installing the bwm-ng package but that's obviously not gonna work either because the server itself isn't online (LAN only). I guess that explains the error. (empy page e</BODY></HTML>0). I'm probably missing a couple of things here but that's why I've stayed away from any user customized addons so far, they're not foolproof enough (for me anyway). I really like the new web-interface and the added features though, it would be a shame to miss out on all the smart features. I'll be grateful for any help.
  12. Will there be any significant changes? I was going to build my unraid server next weekend... guess I might as well wait a little longer and start with 4.3 final instead.

    Getting started

About a week ago I came across a forum post mentioning the concept of unraid and I've been looking into it ever since. The more I saw, the more I loved the idea. I've already used the search function in order to do some more research before posting any stupid questions but the problem is that a lot of those posts were quite old and many compatibility issues seem to have changed with the latest betas. Let's start with the system I'm going to build. Yesterday I bought an Asus P5B-E PLUS, because it shows up on the compatibility list, has 8 sata ports and was quite cheap. You can find the specs here: http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=307&model=1399&modelmenu=2 now to get to my first question... The esata port uses the JMB363 chipset. Is it true that it supports a sata multiplier that would let me add additional drives? I mean something like this: http://www.cooldrives.com/cosapomubrso.html the other parts will be: Intel Celeron 430 (cheap and low power consumption) 1GB PC800 RAM 550W PSU Chieftec Big Tower (can take up to 18 hdds) some cheap VGA I'm currently using the same case together with 4 500gb drives which I want to move to the unraid server. I'm also gonna get a 1TB Samsung F1 as parity drive. Is it possible to build the array first and add the parity drive later? I'm on a low budget here and I'd have to transfer the old data to the 1TB hdd and then use two of the 500gb drives to build the array. Then I could transfer the data once again and add the 1TB for parity. It would be better to start with 2 new TB drives (1 parity, 1 data) but I can't afford that right now. I think that's it for now. I'm getting the remaining parts over the next few weeks and if everything works out with those 2 or 3 drives, I'm definitely getting a pro license as well.
