Play media to connected TV offer unRaid server with Plex

Featured Replies

I'm currently running an unRaid server streaming content over the network to an Xbox 360 and PS3.

I wish to connect a TV directly to my unRaid server and use it both as a Plex media server and Plex media player as a single unit. Is this possible, and how would I go about achieving this?

I don't think it's possible. There's no Plex Media Center developed yet for any Linux based devices. Plus it would defeat the purpose of running a server if you're going to use it as a client

Is there a reason why you want to remove the PS3 and 360 from the process?

I think there is a beta release of Plex that supports DLNA which would allow you to use plex with those two devices. If the reason for finding another solution is lack of media support on the console end, that solution would allow you to play pretty much anything you want.

The main reason I wanted to remove the Xbox and PS3 from the process is due to the limitations on file compatibility that they suffer from. Also, the plex client is a much nicer, better presented and functional way to surf your media.

...but if you use the latest 0.9.6.0 server beta with DLNA, it will just transcode anything it can't directly play anyway.  You have 3 possible DLNA clients, your 360, your PS3 and possibly even your TV.  Try it, it *just works*. :)

I do, however, agree that the Plex client is a bit prettier!

yep the current Plex with DNLA is the ticket for you!  Not as pretty but does the trick.  Otherwise you can use a Roku or AppleTV if your after a nice interface.  I use Apple tv and the interface is great but development on the client is getting a bit stale.  But yeah check out DLNA since that won't cost you a dime.

Just one word of caution, the latest ATV3 (1080p) is not yet jail broken.  Check the Firecore site for updates.  Also, if you can find an ATV2 (720p), try to stay with the iOS 4.4 version so you do not have to tether boot.

Hi,

sorry for my english, I'm French  :)

I connect my Samsung SmartTV to Unraid with this configuration :

- unraid is on a VM on Vmware ESXi

- another Vm run VortexBox, with Plex Media Server, and mount share video

- on my TV, I run Widget Plex Laïka (Plex_Laika_0956_America_20120110_09561_America_20120115)

I can access video, Plex organize my  media automatically  and retrieve metadata from the Internet.

Best regards,

Hervé.
