Yes. Exactly that.

 

Even after terminating the dd script I am now seeing writes on the empty drive.

The drive isn't mounted I assume and if dd wrote many zeros to it, then it no longer has a valid filesystem to mount anyway. So nothing except perhaps dd can write to it.

No it's not mounted since the umount command.

 

What can I do?

You can do that regardless of having an Unclean shutdown.   If you do get an Unclean Shutdown just cancel the resulting parity check on booting as you are about to rebuild parity anyway from the remaining drives.

For future reference, I had to do an unclean shutdown, cancel the parity check then use the unsafe shrink array method.

 

It seems the Unraid docs are out of date as the dd shrink array method is not reliable enough to use in practice.
