Harddrives will not spin down - beta.3

Featured Replies

As told in the 7.1.0-beta3-thread, this is my diagnostic-file.

After upgrading to the beta.3 my harddrives will not spin down and the log-file isn't showing anything - at least I don't see anything.

Every help is deeply appreciated.

Kind regards,

Try booting in safe mode, I'm seeing an error logged related to the UD plugin, but not sure if it's related, then start the array, click spin down all and post new diags.

Attached to this message you will find the diagnostics after booting in safe mode.

Doing so,  my zfs-pools aren't mounted as they are encrypted.

Trying to start the pools with the passphrase the ssd-pool works fine but the hdd-pool is labeled as 'wrong or no fs'.

They should still mount normally after imputing the key or passphrase, but it doesn't matter in this issue.

I still don't see any spin down attempt logged, did you click the spin down all button?

yes

I started the zfs-pools and after that I hit the button

The log isn't showing anything also:

Apr  7 18:00:42 HalutNAS emhttpd: spinning down /dev/nvme1n1
Apr  7 18:00:42 HalutNAS emhttpd: spinning down /dev/nvme0n1
Apr  7 18:00:42 HalutNAS emhttpd: sdspin /dev/nvme1n1 down: 25
Apr  7 18:00:42 HalutNAS emhttpd: sdspin /dev/nvme0n1 down: 25

Just the two nvme-drives of the second zpool... but nothing about the first zpool with the hdds.

NVMe devices don't spin down, but those entries are not in the logs posted.

  • Author

Yes, I know but this entries I copied from the log after using the spin down button:

Apr  7 18:00:42 HalutNAS emhttpd: spinning down /dev/nvme1n1
Apr  7 18:00:42 HalutNAS emhttpd: spinning down /dev/nvme0n1

Right now there is no log entry after hitting the spin down button...

That suggest spin down itself is not the problem, just that the command is not actually happening, unclear why, never seen a similar issue, to rule out a config issue, you can try backing up the current flash drive, then recreate with a stock install and copy just the key, super.dat and the pool folder for the assignments, then see if they spin down, and doing that will rule out a config issue.

As I'm using 7.1.0-b3 now - do you want me to go back to 7.0.1?

Ideally, the test with be with the same release, but does it work if you downgrade to 7.0.1 with the same config?

Problem after problem....

going back to 7.0.1 to do the stock installation I replaced the files/folder that you mentioned but I cannot login remotely. Being at the server I can login (gui) but I cannot activate the usb-stick/installation - something I thought will be done by plus.key-file.

Starting the zpool results in an error for the hdd-zpool 'no or wrong fs' with the question to format the drives - haven't done that.

Went back to 7.1.0-beta2 backup - which was doing OK - but is giving me the same error while trying to start the hdd-zpool.

After that tried the latest backup 7.1.0-beta3 - which I created yesterday - same result: 'wrong or no fs'!!

How do I get the hdd-zpool usable again?

Edit:

I was able to get the hdd-zpool up again. But the zpool will not start with manually entering the password.

Using the 'spin down' button the log shows:

This means the device does not support spin down, and it should be based on the hardware, only thing that jumps out is the very old LSI firmware, update to latest and retest.

Holy...

Yes I changed the 9300-8e but did not look at the firmware-version....
