May 2, 201214 yr Author This is what I get when I run the smart report: I can still access the drive and everything. I can play music from it with no issues. Not sure what is going on with it smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright © 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device) A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. May 2, 201214 yr Author I rebooted it and it came back up saying that disk2 - Not Installed. wth Here is a screen shot and a syslog. The weird thing is I can still get to the share that is running off disk2. Disk2 holds all of my music. I can still see all of the music. Weird tower1-disk2.zip

The weird thing is I can still get to the share that is running off disk2. Disk2 holds all of my music. I can still see all of the music. Weird That is not weird, it is the disk being simulated by parity in combination with all the other data disks. It is why we have raid protected arrays. Now, stop the array, power down, re-seat both the power and data cables to that drive, then power up and see if it still is "not installed" If the drive is dead, it will still show as not installed. If not dead, you should be able to run a smart report on the disk and get some SMART statistics. Joe L.

May 2, 201214 yr Author I redid the power connection and replaced the sata cable. Now the drive icon is blue and it says "Stopped. Disabled disk replaced." What is the best thing to do? I attached a smartrpt smart_report_disk2.txt
May 3, 201214 yr looks like it was a loose cable. Basically, check the I'm sure and "Start" the array. The disabled disk will be re-constructed onto itself. Once it is re-constructed, you'll be back as usual.
May 3, 201214 yr Author I checked the drive today and it said it was disabled again. Looks like it needs to be replaced. I have attached a syslog. Can anyone see anything that would signify it is dying? It is disk2 syslog.zip
May 4, 201214 yr Author I bought a new 1TB drive to replace the bad 500GB drive I bought a WD10EARX. It says it is an advanced format drive. I currently have pins 7 and 8 jumped on other advanced format drives. I assume this one is the same. I ask because the web site says something else http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/1400#jumper What jumpers do I need to set on it before installing it? Thanks
May 4, 201214 yr No Jumper. Use 4K-aligned setting. No new drives need jumpers. They were only needed before the 4K-aligned setting was available.

I ask because the web site says something else http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/1400#jumper What jumpers do I need to set on it before installing it? Thanks none. Just treat is as any other drive. Use the unRAID feature to align the partition on a 4k boundry if you like, it probably will not make any difference. The ONLY drive with brain-damaged firmware that worked poorly when not aligned on a 4k boundry was an WD EARS drive. (Not an EARX drive) Do NOT install a jumper. Your drive was not designed to use one and could possibly be damaged if you add one. Joe L.
