Disk errors found. Need advice.

Featured Replies

Last month I had problems with my little server and finally with everyone's help got it fixed.  Now my big server has shown errors after over a year of faithful service.  I think these are purely disk errors but I would really appreciate it if someone could take a look to confirm this.  Either way, what is the next step?  Does the disk need replacing?

it does look like disk3 is gone.

Run a smart check on the drive, that should tell you if its ok or not.

If you have unmenu installed it should have a section for you to test smart

I started a long smart test.  I'll post the results.  I have spare disks so if it needs replacing that isn't the problem.  I just don't want to risk any data loss.

Here are the results of the SMART test:

Even though none of the counters look bad, the message:

is probably bad news - I've had a couple of drives that were like this and when I took them out of the unRAID array and tested them with the Western Digital diagnostic program they failed some tests.

Regards,

Stephen

Thanks for the input.  I will replace it tonight.  I can't remember if I have already precleared the disk or not.  Is there an easy way to tell if I have already precleared it?

  • Author

Thank you!

  • Author

OK, this makes no sense.  I rebooted the server and ran another check and now there are no disk errors.  Should I still replace the disk?

What sort of check? A parity check? Smart Test?

If possible, run Seatools/WD Diags on the drive aswell?

Sorry...I ran another NOCORRECT parity check.

I did another long SMART test and here are the results:

So replace it with a fresh one and then pre-clear the old one again?? Would that take care of it?

No... need to go to all that trouble.

Stop the array

un-assign that drive

Start the array with it un-assigned  (check the I'm sure box if needed)

Stop the array once more

Re-assign the drive to its same slot

Start the array with it newly assigned back where it was.  (again, check the I'm sure box if needed to enable the Start button)

Let unRAId re-construct the drive onto itself.  When it is done, you'll be back to normal.
