USB not bootable after building new server?

Featured Replies

Hi! I've just finished building a new server (H610i, i5-14400). It boots to BIOS fine, and can boot a USB stick with Win11 on it, but refuses to boot from my Unraid USB which I transferred over from the previous motherboard's header. I also can't read the Unraid USB from my Windows laptop. I've created a new Unraid USB but, before I proceed to put that in the new system, I thought I'd better stop and ask how I can bring back my old drive configuration (1 parity, 1 cache, 6 data) without losing anything. Many thanks in advance for any help offered!

Were you using legacy boot before?  Did you try uefi boot?

Hi! I tried both. The stick showed as UEFI in the BIOS, so I tried that first: it just kept cycling back to BIOS. Then switched to legacy (CSM) and it wouldn't boot at all. Then tried the stick in the Windows machine, and it doesn't read.

edit: I found an old screenshot of my array config, so I know which disks should go where. Any suggestions on how I could try to recover the old USB stick before I try to proceed with the new one?

The old USB stick should be readable on a Windows system if it has not failed as it is in FAT32 format which is a standard file format that Windows can use.

Yes, that was what I thought and why I tried to access it on a Windows PC. Nothing doing. :(

edit: just tried again and it was readable, so I took a full copy. Then tried booting from it - nadda. Now it won't read in Windows again either, but at least I've grabbed the copy! What now?

edit: managed to follow the guide to transfer over to the new USB. That was frightening for a while! Lesson learned - backups made!!
