Pre-clear drive?

Featured Replies

I think you used to be able to stick a drive in a usb slot format it and preclear it.

i have a new drive would be nice to format and preclear. I don’t actually want to use the drive. After preclear I just want to put it on a self until I need it or a drive fails. Is this possible at all anymore?

No point in formatting a drive before preclearing it. Format writes an empty filesystem to the disk (that is what format actually means in all OS). Then preclear would wipe that empty filesystem out completely by overwriting the entire disk with zeros.

And you don't need a clear disk to replace a failed disk.

If you want to test a disk by preclearing it, install Unassigned Devices and Unassigned Devices Preclear plugins.

yup that is what I am looking to do. I'd like to make sure the disk checks out before sticking it on a shelf.
