"Machine Check Events detected on your server".. How to proceed?

Featured Replies

I received this error today:

FCP error.png

I went to the "Fix Common Problems" plugin and saw this:

errors found.png

I then went to "System Logs" in the "Tools" tab and found these:

mcelog error (06-10-2025).png

mcelog error (06-18-2025).png

mcelog error (06-21-2025).png

It seems like it could be a RAM issue, but I am not sure. Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for taking time out of your day to help!

mce event are 90% ram. reboot unraid at the grub boot menu select memtest. as this is a sign of hardware failure.

Unriad the Host OS it self sits in ram. On intel you can run mcelog if no output it was ecce ram memory correction if output then thats the issues.

Its best when you hit a MCE to reboot unraid and at the grub boot menu run the memtest application to rule out faulty hardware.

If AMD mcelog application doesn't work for you, your better off installing the CA Plugin live memory test and also to reboot unraid and at the grub boot menu run the memtest application to rule out faulty hardware.

this looks like ram failure and hardware needs to be replaced.

bmartino1,

I am greatful for you taking time out of your day and attempting to help, but this is just copy/paste Squids post on the subject that I found by simply clicking on the error in the "Fix Common Problems" plug-in. I posted MY error messages in the hopes that someone familiar with the issue could give me a more "informed" opinion on exactly what the errors are telling me. Shutting down my server and going through 16 DIMMS one at a time is something I would like to avoid if possible, although that is what I might end up doing. Again, thank you bmartino1.

Gave generic response I give to almost all mcelog post and questions. Without the diag file or other info to go off of limited data gets limited reply. Its not quite Copy/paste from FCP...

More depends on if your runnign intel / amd as both have different things to do to check and go about.

But since you have so many back to back this is almost definetly ram failure in some way.

Good luck

This points to a bad DIMM, system event or IPMI log may have additional information on the affected slot.

Thank you both for the assistance! I didn't think of the IPMI logs to help diag., that was a great idea. It does indeed seem to be a DIMM issue. Interesting to note, all the errors appeared during a time when the server was unusually hot, as in the room the server lives in was left without AC for a few days. Have either of you heard of getting errors like this during a period of unusually high temps? I ask because since the temps have been brought back to reasonable levels, I have not received any further errors. As a matter of fact, the "Fix Common Problems" plug-in has actually cleared the error seemingly by itself.

yes high temps can cause ram modules to fail.
The Borg (A unraid machine I check in for a fridned from time to time...) was running some old hardware with a AMD Operon... This machine had problems being in the top of our server rack due to heat.

after known heat issues with this system, As in our sumers for 3 years as the heat issues got worse over time... due to other issues more with direct sunlight problems in the home/rack placment... eventual the heat kiled the ram modules.

As, It takes a lot to kill ram modules theses days. Even if its having issues it will still atampt to function and do things. as long as memory live test a unraid plugin is function and the system is staying cool... I don't see a issues with running the current hardware as is. We eventually added additional fan cooling / heatsincson ram for its replacment.

I would still strongly recomend a reboot to clear MCE events. as this would reload unrad back into Ram. Other than that it more alerts if temps (Usually HD) getting to a certain temp and telling it to sleep / shutdown to protect hardware.

Some hardware have temp controls and will auto shutdown due to high heat to protect hardware. Silicone lottery. IF heats your culprit watch temps and pontental add additional cooling around the dims of the motherboard.
adational memroy cooling fans may benefit you hear:

I just got done with a reboot and a memtest that came back with no errors. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that the heat was the culprit.

My Unraid server is a R720XD so I'm not sure how viable adding additional cooling to the DIMMS would be, outside of adjusting the fan curve in IPMI. The increased temperature in the room was a pretty unusual event so I'm not terribly concerned about doing anything drastic. I will keep a close eye on things for the time being.

Thanks again bmartino1 for your assistance with this problem. This is my first post on the forum. I've always heard that Unraid has a great community and after my experience with this issue, I would have to agree with the sentiment! Stay cool out there brother!!
