[7.01] Share Giving Disk Full Error and Not Allowing New files of Directories

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone can help with an issue I’ve just started to encounter. When I try and create a new directory or add files to one of my shares I’m getting a disk full error. Initially I could get round this using Krusader but that now appears not to allow it either. In terms of what I’ve tried so far:-

Accessing via a different PC

Rebooting the server

Other shares on the array seem fine

This is my Multimedia share so there are a lot of films and TV programmes in there if I’ve perhaps hit some limit?

In terms of other info; I did add another blank disk and format it last week (Not added to array), but although I don’t believe in coincidence I’m pretty sure the array was working fine afterwards.

As always I attach my diags.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Many thanks

Share floor is set to 780GB, which is over the free space available on the current disks, adjust that.

Many thanks both, that solved my issue. I know you both responded around the same time so apologies I can only mark one as solution.

Out of curiosity is there an optimum value for this setting?

It should be larger than any file you expect to write to the share. How much is up to you. I have mine set to 50GB because that is the max size of a Blu-ray disk. An argument could be made for making it, say, 10%, 20% or 30% larger. Watch out for Image backup files of Windows OS disks. Depending on what is on that OS disk, they can be humongous if that disk contains all the data as well as the OS!

Frank1940 is right. I'll add one other thing about his last comment...

Need to be doubly careful when backing up things such as other systems or drives. With many backup programs, the final file size is unknown until the backup is completed (for programs which write compressed image files). I use Macrium Reflect for backing up several Windows machines. I skip the cache entirely for the share I keep backups. After all, it is running daily in the background, so I don't need to sit and wait while it runs. Also, it saves writing the data twice - once to cache, then again to the array (via mover).
