SOLVED - Unexpected clean shutdown every couple of hours, UPS?

Featured Replies

I've attached the syslog anyone able to point me in the right direction to fix this, I get a clean shutdown every couple hours, I've replaced my UPS with a new one and I assume that's the issue but I can't tell what the problem is, the UPS settings all indicate there is loads of time on battery left. I'll include snapshot of my UPS setting. Thank you!

Yes, apcupsd is shutting the system down after power loss.

You are using your UPS incorrectly though.

The purpose of UPS isn't to allow you to run on battery. The purpose of UPS is to allow clean shutdown when power is lost.

UPS should allow system to keep running during very brief loss of power, but shutdown if power loss is not very brief.

You should set "Time on battery before shutdown". 120 seconds or even less.

Okay I have made that change, but I guess in my head it was that the server runs on line power until it senses only so many minutes left then clean shutdown? I guess in my naivete I assume the server when connected through UPS is running on line power until power dies then runs on battery until it senses so many minutes left then does a clean shutdown? I haven't had any power loss and the battery is full so not sure how it shutdowns every couple hours or so.

If you let it run down, then when you restart you may not have enough power left for another clean shutdown before it gets a chance to recharge. Also, running battery down decreases its life and performance.

Your syslog says otherwise.

Four separate instances of UPS detecting power loss.

Aug 21 20:53:23 Tower apcupsd[3720]: Power failure.
Aug 21 20:53:27 Tower apcupsd[3720]: Power is back. UPS running on mains.
Aug 21 22:11:03 Tower emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sde
Aug 21 22:11:39 Tower emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdd
Aug 21 22:42:19 Tower apcupsd[3720]: Power failure.
Aug 21 22:42:20 Tower apcupsd[3720]: Reached remaining time percentage limit on batteries.
Aug 21 22:42:20 Tower apcupsd[3720]: Initiating system shutdown!

Yes, I agree if I ever had a power outage but I haven't despite what the UPS is saying or what unraid is sensing I haven't had any power outages but a mystery it shall remain, your advice fixed it thank you.
