August 27, 2025Aug 27 OK, so I'm just not sure where else to ask this...I recently had a friend trying to build a new gaming computer, and they wanted a 4080 FE for it. I had one, and was not really using it... So I "sold" it to them with the intent of picking up a 5080 when they came out.I should be able to get one shortly after launch right? Oops... I had a need/urge earlier than expected and no GPU other than an old 1660 Ti that I had lying around. OK I'll use that until I can get one.Patiently Waiting...Today I got notice that I could get a 5090FE if I jumped on it (At MSRP) so I did... And then I got the notice that I could get a 5080FE as well... So I jumped on that too...Both can be easily returned if I don't open them, so I have 30 day to pick which one I want to keep.So here is my build:Unraid Server with a Windows 11 VM with a Video card and NVME drive passed through that can display on either my 4K 32" 144hz monitor or on my 4K 75" 60Hz tv in the TV room. My goal is to play games with my kid in the great room most of the time but have the option of playing alone if I have time. (More details on the system in my Sig)Here Are My Questions:Power: My original reason for going with the 4080 was that I only have a 1000W power supply and a lot of other toys in the machine. I could upgrade the PSU but ... I don't really want to right now... If I do run into issues, would lowering the power limits on the 5090 be a reasonable solution?Heat: I am assuming that heat is negligible when the system is not running games... My system runs with a case temperature 26.3C most of the time.Noise: I've worked really hard to keep this system quiet... Can I assume that the 5080 and 5090 will behave like the 4080 and shut the fans off at idle?Performance: I know the system will be bottlenecked by the CPU, but regardless should I expect better 4K performance from the 5090 than the 5080?Thanks for Reading and thank you for any input
