Disk in error state

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just seen an error message pop saying that one of my disks is in error state, currently with 15 errors.

I wanted to preform a smart disk check but when I go to do this, nothing happens. Reading your FAQ this looks like it might be becuase I need to restart the server?

Before I do this, I've downloaded the logs and attached them.

Could someone please let me know the best course of action is from this point.

If the hard drive is dead / dying, would I be able to move all of the contents onto a recently installed 10tb drive?

Thanks in adavnce.

Looks more like a power/connection issue. Check/replace cables and post new diags after array start.

Thanks for such a quick reply.

I've reseated the power & sata connections. Turned back on and was greeted with an "array turned good" message but i'm still seeing a red cross next to the drive and that its emulated.

Latest diagnostics attached.

That's expected; once a disk gets disabled, it needs to be rebuilt.

The emulated disk is mounting; assuming the contents look correct, you can rebuild on top.

Thanks again.

When you say "rebuild on top". Would this be, stop the array, unmount the disk, start array, stop array, mount the disk again, start array.

unmount the disk

If you mean unassign, yes.

Thank you for confirming.

I did as above and during the rebuild the same drive has errored again.

I'm currently paused at 0.5% with 72 errors.

Latest diagnostics attached.

Please could you let me know I should proceed.

Thanks again!

Did you check/replace the cables as suggested before the rebuild? If not, do that now and try again.

  • Author

The first time I just reset the cables.

This time I've replaced the power & sata cables competely.

Re started the rebuild process and its failed at 0.5% again. 1024 errors this time.

SMART still looks good, but if you have replaced the cables, the disk could still be failing, if you don't have a spare, as a final test, you can swap cables/slots with a different disk, retest, and see where the issue follows.

Sorry for the delayed response.

I purchased a cheap 2nd hand drive to swap out the "failing" drive so I can rule something out like you've suggested but after running a smart test on this new drive i get "Completed: read failure".

I've attached the smart disk report, do I need to return this drive?

Thanks again!

I would say yes. You should never be using a drive that cannot complete the Extended SMART test in your system.

Just wanted to add a conclusion.

I've replaced the disk with one that actually passed the SMART test and everything rebuilt.

The faulty 3TB still passes the SMART tests but clearly has an issue somewhere.

In any case, thank you for your help.
