October 12, 2025Oct 12 This morning I awoke to my 8TB Disk 1 having 171 read errors and the following notifications that I had current pending sectors:Once I rebooted my server, all the read errors were gone. I then did an extended self test that "Completed without error".I am new to NAS and Unraid so I am unsure when is the best time to replace a drive. Even though the extended SMART self test had no errors, I still had 7 Reported Uncorrectable Errors in my Device Statistics Error when I used the smartctl -x command.Heres is the output:root@oracle:~# smartctl -x /dev/sdismartctl 7.4 2023-08-01 r5530 [x86_64-linux-6.12.24-Unraid] (local build)Copyright (C) 2002-23, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===Model Family: Western Digital GoldDevice Model: WDC WD8002FRYZ-01FF2B0Serial Number: VJHAUP9XLU WWN Device Id: 5 000cca 261d303a4Firmware Version: 01.01H01User Capacity: 8,001,563,222,016 bytes [8.00 TB]Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physicalRotation Rate: 7200 rpmForm Factor: 3.5 inchesDevice is: In smartctl database 7.3/5706ATA Version is: ACS-2, ATA8-ACS T13/1699-D revision 4SATA Version is: SATA 3.1, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 6.0 Gb/s)Local Time is: Sun Oct 12 14:27:03 2025 EDTSMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.SMART support is: EnabledAAM feature is: UnavailableAPM feature is: DisabledRd look-ahead is: EnabledWrite cache is: EnabledDSN feature is: UnavailableATA Security is: Disabled, frozen [SEC2]Wt Cache Reorder: Enabled=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSEDGeneral SMART Values:Offline data collection status: (0x82) Offline data collection activity was completed without error. October 12, 2025Oct 12 Community Expert when you start seeing smart error. All Disk have an average MTF (mean time to failure) and should be replaced around that MTF. lower disk usage = longer time and chace of not needing a replacment. Some refimrb disk have extended or bad smart data. But given that you are seeing smart errors and continued smart error its time to replace backup and setup a sytem to recover from.
October 13, 2025Oct 13 Community Expert Solution You can run an extended SMART test on that disk, if it fails, it should be replaced.
