Very Slow Tailscale ??

Featured Replies

Hello good people..

I have the tailscale plugin installed, but the speed is not very good, About 15 mbit..

My internet is 1000/1000.. And i have a 8core amd processor, in my unrade server... I checked the speed on an 900 mbit 5g antenna, in my city.. Does anyone know how to speed this up??

I tested it using SpeedTest-By-OpenSpeedTest.

Or is this the fastest it will go??

thank you.

Regards..

Hello again:)

just out of curiosity what speed are you getting??

regards

Using home server as an exit node while at the cottage I get 72.8Mbps on a 50 Mbps cottage connection.

Hey Just tested on LTE on my Phone getting about 60Mbps download and 11Mbps on upload. If you have a laptop you could use a tool like tracert or ping plotter, to see if you are getting bad ping at certain hops or packet loss, But in terms of speeding it up it likely is something between your Unraid server and your phone that is out of your control.

Hey! A few quick tips you could try:
- Run tailscale status and check if it says “via DERP”. If yes, your traffic is relayed - open UDP 41641 on your router so it can go direct (P2P is much faster).
- Use iperf3 between your Tailscale devices to test raw speed instead of Speedtest.
- Check CPU load during transfer - Tailscale (WireGuard) uses only one core per tunnel.
- If you’re on Unraid, try switching network mode or disabling Docker bridge isolation temporarily - it can throttle UDP performance.

So, exit notes are excellent on linux and pair well with unraid. However, like @Horce1983 said, you can try to optimize the items he suggests. The problem for me is that we really can't open UDP as they suggest and we have tons of users connecting from many different locations.

On the linux machine, you need to make sure to enable IP forwarding for the best experience. Check out the advertise an exit node section for linux: https://tailscale.com/docs/features/exit-nodes?tab=linux#allow-the-exit-node-from-the-admin-console

Next, derp settings will come into play if you don't open 41641. So, the best thing to do is to run tailscale netcheck and see what derp servers you are using. We also block certain derp servers and countries. You can learn all about it here: https://youtu.be/XOD3yfQKHoo

Other than that, you can build your own derpmap with this tool:
