[SOLVED] Red dot. disk failure

Featured Replies

Hi guys.  First time poster.  I've been using unraid for 3 years, trouble free until now.  I recently added 2tb wdearx to the array.  Precleared fine.  Added data to drive then checked parity.  Red dot came up with 576 errors on drive.  I changed sata cable and molex to sata power adapter.  precleared fine.  Added data second time.  Checked parity and same thing:  red dot with 576 errors.

Tried smart and wound not test:

root@Tower1:~# smartctl -d ata -tshort /dev/sdi

smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build)

Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device)

A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.

Attached the syslog.  Not sure how to read it, but came up with a bunch of errors.

Unraid server:

Sempron 140

MSI 785gtm e45

2gb ddr2

Promise sata300 tx4

Hitachi 2tb 7200 parity

Samsung F3 2tb x2

Hitachi 2tb 5400 2tb x2

WD Ears 2tb x2

WD Earx 2tb x2

Trouble drive is WD Earx 2tb on 3rd port of the promise sata300 tx4 if that helps.

You guys are the experts.  Is it a drive problem?  I can still return the drive and get another.

Thanks.

disk8 is showing non-stop input/output errors, so the system is having difficulty in getting the drive to even respond. Have you tried connecting it to a different SATA port? If so, then I'd say it's almost definitely a bad disk.

Ok.  Thanks.

How should I proceed?

Stop array.  Unassign drive.  Shut down.  Plug into diff port than fire up?

I plugged the drive into the 4th port of the sata card.  I parity checked.  No errors!  The 3rd port must be broken (used same sata cable and sata power adapter).  When I tried to run Smart, It did not recognize:

root@Tower1:~# smartctl -d ata -tshort /dev/sdi

smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build)

Any ideas why I cannot run SMART?  I can run SMART on the drives connected to port 1 & 2 of the SATA Card.

I don't see the syslog.

Parity checked fine.  Smart is a no go.  Attached syslog.

Port 1 & 2 good and smart works.

Port 3 bad?  smart does not work.

Port 4 okay but smart does not work.

Hard drive problem? as well as bad port 3?

syslog_2.zip

Connect the question drive to port 1 or 2 and see if SMART works.

Connected EARX  drive to port 1 and then other EARS drive to port 4.

Port 1 was able to do SMART (attached the log).

Port 4 was able to do SMART with EARS drive.

Port 2 was able to do SMART with other EARX drive.

Strange.  The "problem EARX" drive not able to do SMART on port 4, but on port 1.

The EARS drive able to do SMART on port 1 and 4.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for all your help.

Not sure what happened?  Maybe the controller card was not seated well in it's slot?  Everything works fine now.  No errors.  SMART works on all ports.

Going through this, I now know how to trouble shoot and rebuild.

THANKS AGAIN. ;D
