May 27, 201214 yr Since I have to replace my MB I was hoping to get some recommendations. It should be able to support an i3 cpu and SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8. It can have either 4 or 6 sata ports onboard since I already have a 2 port sata card. I don't mind spending up to $125. Any good recommendations?
May 27, 201214 yr Author Well, may not need this at all. Seems like I had one bad memory module in my pc. I'm now running on 512K ddr2 and everything seems to be working ok. I guess I'll buy a 1gb or 2gb stick as I'm not sure 512K is enough.
May 28, 201214 yr I've got 2 1gb ddr2 1066 sticks laying around if you want to buy them. I used them for about 4 months, and bought them brand new. This is the link to them: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231144 I think $35.00 is a good offer?
May 28, 201214 yr Author Thanks for the offer but I can get two corsair 1gb dd2 stix for $30 at my local store. I'm just debating if I should buy 1gb or 2. If I buy the 1gb stick it wouldn't be running in dual channel mode. Not sure if that is a big deal since my server is only for storage of movies, music etc. I don't do anything else with it. Plus I was thinking of upgrading the mb, cpu etc some time next year so don't want to spend money on things that I'll eventually ditch.
May 28, 201214 yr Understandable. I went with the two sticks of 1gb first. Now, I've got 2 stick of 2gb for a total of 4gb of ram. I was able to get them for $45 dollars new on ebay. I don't really need it since I don't use any other application with my server, but it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
June 3, 201214 yr I would go for a single 2GB DDR2-800 as dual channel would be a negligable gain for unRAID. Under heavier load (if the PC were running Windows or doing something that was actually memory intensive) you might see, maybe 5% increase at the cost of an extra DIMM. A 2GB stick would be more useful to have lying around later on than 2x1GB would be
