Static ip not working

Featured Replies

I upgraded to 7.2.2 over the weekend and last night couldn't find my server.

I have a static up set on pfsense, 192.168.0.14 and it's been like that for months. Working absolutely fine.

Last night I had to connect a monitor to

My server to find out my up has changed to 192.168.0.104.

On the pfsense dhcp lease table I have two entries for my tower with both those ip addresses both with the same mac. But the first one doesn't worky

This only happened last night and I haven't had time to dig in the logs. I was just wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar and could save me the aggro of spending a few hours on this later tonight. Or if it's an existing bug I'll just have to wait.

You dont have a static IP if you have got it over DHCP.

You may have a pseudo static IP if the DHCP server is configured to send out always the same IP if the request comes from a certain MAC, but that is not the same as "static ip".

Ok, so far not helpful, I know :-)

I guess your firewall/DHCP server has undergone some changes due to recent updates or something. He does not find the old assignment anymore, so he issues a new address (the old one is still in the tables, so it should complain about double assignments somewhere, check the logs)

While reserving the IP address using the MAC address on the router usually works--- Assuming the router supports this 'feature' ---it is not bulletproof as @MAM59 has suggested. It is advisable to also setup your server to use that same static IP address. It may be a belt-and -suspenders arrangement but it is more foolproof.

Back in the dark ages, before routers had address reservation as a feature, it was necessary to assign static IP addresses at the high end of the DHCP pool so that DHCP would never get around to using them. 😏 With so many WIFI devices these days, I am not sure this would even work...

Yup the ip is assigned via my pfsense. However that works is beyond me and I'm glad I don't have to spend the next few days learning about how it works.

The issue did resolve itself so I don't know if it originated from u raid or pfsense.

I do appreciate you taking the time. Your comments would probably have pointed me in the right direction to get started.
