May 19, 200818 yr I'm new to unRAID but really like what I see thus far. I have unRAID 4.2 setup on VMWare, and its working great. I did this so I could get the feel and easily simulate failures, upgrades, etc. Nothing like a good test drive. My proposed setup is modest but I really just need info on compatibility - be it an answer or a url of wiki/post. Goals: 1. Expandable storage 2. Streaming to MediaPortal and other computers - rarely if ever 2 at a time. Hardware: ECS p4m800pro m78 - matx board p4 3.0GZ EE - 1 meg cache, baseboard heater 512 meg - 2x256 DDR built in nic 1x750gig sata2 - parity 1x750gig sata2 1x500gig ide ata66 Questions: 1. Does anyone know (or can point me to) this board booting from USB? 2. are the controllers support for this board? 3. I know 512 is the minimum - but will it suffice for my simple needs? Thanks a lot. I'm looking forward to helping this community.
May 19, 200818 yr 1. should be 2. dunno - possibly you need to provide us with a bit more info (so we won't have to look), like what chipsets it uses 3. yeap
May 19, 200818 yr Author The chipset is VT8237 - and its not super common most info I have found on it is dated.
May 20, 200818 yr Another user recently reported using a similar board, with some issues: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1997.
May 20, 200818 yr Author RobJ Thanks! I guess I never searched on the motherboard model. That seems odd to me, perhaps I searched in the wrong forum. In any case. This is great news (sorta). 1. I can boot from usb drive 2. My 3ghz p4 will be fast enough 3. I can possibly expect long clearing times I'm on financial block currently. The ministry of finance has denied future purchases in the wake of a long weekend away. I believe the red tape can be cleared within 7 days. Thanks for the quick replies everyone.
June 3, 200818 yr How did you get unRAID to work on VMware? VMware doesn't support booting from usb. I have been looking through a bunch of forums trying to do this. Thanks
June 3, 200818 yr Author To get VMWare running, the answers are in the posts scattered about. At work we have a great resource for issues, but there is never one place with the answer - its always scattered about. Perhaps that helped me. 1. VMWare doesn't boot from USB disk - so use a standard tiny 256meg IDE disk 2. Mount that disk in explorer 3. treat it like usb flash and follow unraid instructions - so syslinux the drive 4. make sure networking is set to bridged You may need to make the changes from this post http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1215.0 Since you HAVE to have a usb flash for anything greater than the free version, this will only work for the Basic. VMware only supports 4 hard drives anyway, so its not a big loss. Add your 3 other drives - all IDE- not scsi. Doing this you can then setup your array, and tweak the drive sizes after its working to simulate drive replacement, test availability of data during rebuild or degraded status. Good luck
