Thanks, M- Not normally. It is automatic. unRAID itself is Not hot-plugable in most versions. Only in the latest few beta and rc versions of 5.0 will that work, and only with the array being stopped can the disks be recognized in unRAID. (they will show as /dev/sd? though, even on older versions, unless set up as emulated IDE, in which case, they will be /dev/hd?)

I've been shutting down my server for awhile now even though I have 24 hotswap bays. I was under the impression it doesn't work, and i've been running the latest betas/RCs! So I just need to stop my array, put the drive in, and it should detect it on RC4? I will have to test.. if so that is great! If I am just going to preclear a new drive, do I need to stop the array or can I just plug it in?
June 9, 201214 yr Author I am running 5.0rc3. I thought I would try out the hot swap bays. My real array is hooked to the regular mounts, SATA ports, power etc. I put the bays in to try them out. I know the drives are spinning up (I can hear them and they get hotter), but I don't see them in /dev/sd*. I have /dev/sda, b, c, and d. d is the USB drive, a, b, and c are the normal array. M-

M- then, it is possible your hardware does not support hot-plugging. (or, you do not have AHCI enabled in the BIOS on those ports)
June 9, 201214 yr If I am just going to preclear a new drive, do I need to stop the array or can I just plug it in? Again, as stated. It really depends on your hardware and its settings. ACHI and hardware supporting hotswap. On some server boards, you have to turn on "hot-swap" in the bios for each drive. For consumer boards, it is hit or miss in ACHI mode. Most SAS cards support ACHI natively. I know I can just plug a drive into my setup, log into the console and start a preclear on the drive I just inserted. this is while the array is still running.
June 9, 201214 yr Devices are inventoried when the main web page is reloaded. Insert the drive first then stop the array and the new disk should appear. Or stop, insert, and then refresh the page.

Ah, but for the disks to show in the unRAID interface they must first exist as /dev/sd? devices. If the OS did not see the hot-plug because the hardware did not support it, or was not enabled in the BIOS, stopping/re-starting the unRAID array will do nothing.
