Was hoping the array wouldn't be too out-of-sync with physical disk1, and you could New Config it back into the array, disable disk5 and try to rebuild it instead.

But doesn't seem likely that would work now.

Do you have a disk you can use to clone disk5? Even better, do you also have a disk you can use to rebuild disk1 to, and so keep existing physical disk1 as it is until we can see the results of rebuilding disk1?

Or maybe just clone disk5, New Config physical disk1 back into the array, possibly check filesystem on either disk to repair if necessary, hope for the best, and accept whatever data loss results.

I’m gonna see if we can swing an extra drive to see if we can save as much as possible. Sadly bad thing about not having access to the physical server is having to wait for my friend to do all this

If we can emulate disk1 with the disk5 clone in the array, it should give a good idea of how disk1 rebuild will go, since the emulated contents are exactly what will be rebuilt, assuming all goes well.

Actually making this happen isn't difficult, but is a little more complicated than a normal rebuild, and will require following detailed instructions exactly. Might be better if you could take care of this in person.

My friend is tech literate, so do you think it would still be complicated for someone who knows their way around a pc and has the knowledge to follow technical instructions? Or would his lack of experience with Unraid itself make it too complicated for him?

I’m definitely willing to make the drive if I have to. But it would be easier (and cheaper lol) if I can give him the instructions and have him do it, of course while I’m confirming everything he’s doing.

First step is cloning disk5. Maybe even ddrescue since it seems to be failing.
