Fan choice

Featured Replies

I have read the fan reviews thread, and have some additional questions.

First, I have seen some folks post builds using a particular type of fan from a certain manufacture.  The fans are supposed to be very quiet, and are thicker than your average 25mm fan.  I can't for the life of me find any more posts with this fan... I know its not a lot to go on, but if anyone happens to think they know what I'm talking about, would you mind posting the brand?

Second, I was looking at this fan:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835226045

And was wondering if anyone has any experience here.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but the integrated temp sensor means the fan will spin faster with hotter internal air.  This system will sit in the living room, and during a quiet time of a show or movie, I don't want to hear the fans spinning.  I had planned on using a fan controller, but if this fan will auto-adjust rotational speed based on temperature, that may be sufficient.  I would be using five total.  Any experience to share?

Thanks.

Well I ordered three.  Will report back.

Based on the pictures at Newegg, there is nothing special about the fan design for "silent" operation. The blades to not show grooves and other flow mechanisms for silent operation. I suspect they are typical noise level, but operate less due to the self regulation. The placement of the thermistor(s) will be key. With proper airflow control, these fans will operate individually and provide needed cooling only, no excess noise from excess cooling.

Perhaps not, but the Silenx EFX series in particular gets rave reviews on every site I've visited, and have excellent CFM-to-noise ratios.  If these thermistor-controlled versions don't do the trick, its easy enough to bypass the thermistor and simply run them off a fan controller.
