Access Unraid from another country (also problem mapping drives)

Featured Replies

I'm gonna be moving to another country soon, work stuff. I can't take my Unraid setup with me. I do use my Unraid from time to time and while I could live without it, kinda, is there a way I can continue using it? I could have someone turn it on and off, without a GUI, all they'd have to do is flick the switch when I say. Just wondering if anyone is using their Unraid long distance, as and when required and is there a risk?

There are several ways to do this. Reverse proxy, Wireguard or other VPN, PiKVM (lets you turn Unraid server on/off remotely) with a VPN. In my homes, I have a Ubiquiti UniFi network infrastructure so it is even easier via teleport and SD-WAN, although, I also use all the remote access methods I mentioned.

There are many safe Unraid remote access methods and several youtube videos on the subject.

Tailscale is also a good option IMO.

@UNPAID Yes. I forgot Tailscale. I have used that as well and it does not require port forwarding like some of the others.

I will echo what @Hoopster said about using a PiKVM or some other remote management solution, especially if you don't have someone back at the server when issues arise. While my server runs many months at a time without issues, Murphy will always show up at the most inconvenient time. I have a PiKVM that allows you to power on/off the server. Boot your server in GUI mode, and you can access your server from a browser. You won't be wishing to do much work this way, but can restart the server, go into BIOS, do whatever you would as if you are sitting in front of the server. I secure this with a Cloudflare Tunnel and their security/authentication tools.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't think I'd be able to set this up at all as this is just not my expertise and I wouldn't have time to troubleshoot issue...but I checked out Tailscale using Spaceinvader One's guides to make sense of it and I think I got it set up somehow...I just need to test my device away from my server now. At first I was having problems with getting the connection secure but after a restart it's actually working?! I did notice the certificates are set to expire in 3-6 months, will this cause an issue later on?

Do I need "Use SSL/TLS" set to Yes? Currently it's No.

I noticed I can't access Unraid dashboard when I use my regular VPN service...is that just cause its running thru Tailscale which is already a VPN?

Can someone explain why my mapped drives no longer work when I'm not near my server?

I got Tailscale installed on my laptop and use Tailscale's address with HTTPS to log into my server and map the drives and it all works, when I'm on my network.

But trying to access the mapped drives on a different network results in error saying "it's mapped with a different user/password"...and I can't re map it, even if I delete the drive.

I found using the Tailscale 100.xxx.... address will map the drive and I can access it but it's HTTP...

I have SSL enable so I can't access my Unraid with the Tailscale 100.xxx.... address because it's not secure and I wanted it to be HTTPS

Any help would be appreciated.
