Is there a way to make an X299 platform "power efficient"?

Featured Replies

I am currently in a X99 platform (4930K, Asus Rampage IV BE, 32Gb Ram, 1x 980GTX) and the PSU reports about 220W at idle.

I had all the hardware from when I last upgraded my main PC and it is an X299 platform (i9 10920X, Rampage VI Omega, 64Gb Ram, 2x 2080Ti) and plan to swap it all.

To be honest I have neglected looking into making the current setup less power hungry at idle but I want to fix that on the new one.

Disks wise I will keep the same, and maybe add some NVME drives now that I will move to a MOBO that supports them. I will also keep the same PSU (Corsair AX1200i).

Any suggestions, apart from downclocking and spinning down disks?

Thanks!

How many drives?

But not really, those platforms were meant for power and not efficiency, highly inefficient by today's standards...

Yeah I know. It will be hard to make it consume less than it is now.

I have 6 HDDs, 3 SATA SDDs and plan to add 1 or 2 NVMEs

At the end of the day it is hardware that I already own, and with current prices on RAM, GPUs and storage (and everything else, seriously...) I think I am better reusing it.

The 64Gb of DDR4 will be nice and I can run some local LLMs with those 2 GPUs :D

I mean with that storage if you wanted something efficient you could get a used mobo/CPU of late DDR4 gen with iGPU like some i5 10-12th gen that you could reuse your RAM on, no GPUs, and get something that idles <60W. Sell the old HW since there are still people paying more than it's worth for X99/X299 stuff.

But if you plan to use those GPUs anyway... they're probably gonna draw 30-50W idle each already so yeah, not gonna be efficient.

Yeah I rather use it as it is. I have a bunch of docker containers running and a few VMs that I spin up from time to time.

Plus I want to get some LLMs running in there.

Let's hope they make plug-in solar legal in the UK soon so I can offset a bit of the electricity bill with it XD
