2 SSDs - best use?

Featured Replies

I have ~100TB in storage on spinning disks, primarily media. Written once, read many times. I have 2x 500GB SSDs that just became available from a different device that I've decommissioned. There is currently no cache pool or appdata for the 100TB Array - it's just dumb SMB storage at the moment.

I was going to mirror the 2x 500GB SSDs, move to SSD boot on the mirror, add the remaining storage not used for boot to a mirror cache pool. If I want to use Docker down the road, is it better to not mirror the SSDs and have 1 for cache and the 2nd for app data, VM storage, etc? I was reading that it may not be ideal from a wear perspective to have cache, boot, and docker/VM storage all on the same physical SSDs.

  1. Cache is just a pool name, not a function.

  2. Mirror them and use it for anything that needs protection and fast access like appdata, vm storage, etc. The boot partition will be separate and by default mirrored. (do not make the boot partition larger than 16GB unraid is only 2GB in size)
