I have ~100TB in storage on spinning disks, primarily media. Written once, read many times. I have 2x 500GB SSDs that just became available from a different device that I've decommissioned. There is currently no cache pool or appdata for the 100TB Array - it's just dumb SMB storage at the moment. I was going to mirror the 2x 500GB SSDs, move to SSD boot on the mirror, add the remaining storage not used for boot to a mirror cache pool. If I want to use Docker down the road, is it better to not mirror the SSDs and have 1 for cache and the 2nd for app data, VM storage, etc? I was reading that it may not be ideal from a wear perspective to have cache, boot, and docker/VM storage all on the same physical SSDs.

Hey everyone - new Unraid user here. I currently have a Mac OS Plex Server front-end with a windows 11 SMB back-end for the files running Stablebit Drivepool. The Windows 11 device is a Beelink MiniPC with 16GB RAM and an Intel 1235U. It is plenty of firepower for a simple file server. It is connected to this IOCrest USB 3.2 HDD enclosure. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DCDDGHMJ) It passes SMART and other HDD info thru properly in Windows and works just fine currently, so I am assuming it will be fine for Unraid even though I understand USB isn't the preferred config. It's been rock solid under windows for me for years. This file server is the last Windows device in my house and I would like to migrate it to Unraid. With the price of hardware, I would like to do this in-place. My disk layout and config are below. I'd appreciate anyone who has experience with this chiming in with anything I may be missing or if this will even work at all! Beelink SEI12 mini PC with an Intel 1235U, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD for the OS, and an additional 500GB SSD in the second SATA slot that is currently the landing zone for SABNZBD downloads before they are moved to the USB-attached HDDs for long term storage. They are not part of my drivepool pool, the files are moved to HDD via the *arrs after the unzip is complete. In the USB 3.2 enclosure, there are 5x 16TB HDDs and 3x 8TB. I currently have 2x16TB empty as my initial drives that will be my first Unraid share. I am planning on: Install VirtIO drivers in the current installation prior to Unraid install so that the current OS is ready to be run inside of Unraid. Disable secure boot in the Beelink bios Power off all but the two empty 16TB drives for the initial share. My enclosure has a power button for each slot. Install Unraid and boot from USB on the current PC. Configure the share and set up a Windows VM. Power on the 6x HDDs that will be passed thru. Configure Pass-Thru for both SSDs in the Beelink and the 6x data drives in my Stablebit Drivepool pool. Set the current boot SSD which was passed thru in the previous step as the boot volume for this new VM Power on the VM Pray? Set up an NFS share on the new Unraid install, present it to the plex server, and add it as a second library source for each library. Migrate data from the passed thru disks inside the VM to the native shares in Unraid. As disks empty from Windows, remove them from pass thru and add them to the NFS share. Eventually Windows will be empty of data disks. I can delete the VM and stop passing the two 500GB SSDs thru and add them as a mirror cache to the NFS plex data share. Remove the windows SMB paths from the plex libraries and run a library scan/trash cleanup/etc. Does anyone know if I need to sysprep first? Will this work? I understand this isn't a Plex forum but if anyone has experience with the rest of this, I am pretty confident in the Plex-specific steps already.
