June 25, 201214 yr I plan on putting 4 CSE-M35T cages in my case. What PSU has enough 4p Molex connectors to power these. Since every cage has 2 of those connectors I guess I need at least 8 of these. I presume all connectors on the cages need to be powered. Will a Seasonic Xseries do?
June 25, 201214 yr My Corsair AX850 has 8 MOLEX-connectors. Actually from the manual... (happened to be at my desk) AX650, AX750 and AX850 has 2 cables with 4 MOLEX-connectors each. AX 1200 have 3x4 MOLEX
June 26, 201214 yr Avoid splitters, if at all possible. I purchased the Seasonic X650 rather than the newer X660 precisely because the older model comes with 8 molex as standard and the newer model has less. Others, however, have commented that Seasonic will send out additional power harnesses for free, if you ask. However, being in the Philippines, I didn't want to rely on this.
June 26, 201214 yr Author Thank you all. Bit of a stupid design to have two molexes on on drive cage. Couldn't this have been avoided?
June 26, 201214 yr Well, it could have been avoided if they'd used a better (different) connector. The molex connector is only rated at eleven amps max. Five drives can, potentially, draw more than eleven amps - hence the doubled-up connections. I've experienced molex connectors which have become too hot - the nylon shell melts and makes a mess!
July 12, 201213 yr Author Another question on this subject: On the Seasonic website for the X760 I read: Peripheral 4 pin x 8. I guess that means there are 2 or 3 cables with a total of 8 molex connectors. Are the 2 cables with 4 molexes each? Or 3 (2x3, 1x2molex)?
July 12, 201213 yr If it's the same as the X650, it's 2x3 plus 1x2. I suspect that this is dictated, again, by the maximum current rating of the cable loom connectors at the psu end.
