June 26, 201214 yr I noticed that one of my drives is an hdX (i.e., hda) drive. It's a 1 terabyte WD green drive that I bought not too long ago. This link http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Configuration_Tutorial#Preclear_Hard_Drives states the following: Note: If you have only SATA drives and see a /dev/hdX device it indicates you have set your motherboard BIOS to have it emulate an older IDE drive to the operating system. This is NOT desired for SATA drives since they will not be able to use any of their more advanced features. You instead want ACHI mode, not legacy mode. I went into my bios and enabled ACHI mode. The problem is that if I disable "use mixed IDE mode" (or something like that -- can't check now, as I'm running a pre-clear) in my BIOS, the hdX drive no longer shows up in my Unraid configuration. So, I have to keep "use mixed IDE mode" enabled, and my 1 terabyte WD green drive still is listed as an hda drive. Is having this drive listed as an hda drive a big deal? If so, how do I correct this and will I lose any data on the drive? Thank you.
June 26, 201214 yr When you switch to AHCI it will show up as a /dev/sd#. If you are using an older version of unraid, such as the 4.7 series, you will need to reassign your drive. On the current 5.0 RC branch, unraid should be able to smartly determine it's the same drive so it should not require any user intervention to get the array running.
June 26, 201214 yr Author Ha! That worked! I am using 4.7. All I had to do was (after reconfiguring my BIOS) was to reassign the drive back to the correct disk device in the array. Thank you!
