APC UPS pure sine / active pfc question

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have the Corsair CX430 psu powering my sempron 145 based unraid server holding 6 drives (5 of them 5400rpm)

I am looking for a ups as we had a brief power outage last week and I got annoyed (especially because my security system is hooked up to a cell gateway and it did not work during that time >:( )

Anyway, I looked at a few APC ups units without pure sine, and saw some reviews saying that they are not compatible with many newer computers with high wattage psu's(or more specifically high wattage active pfc psu's). As I have an active pfc psu, I was wondering if it would be an issue, given my psu is not that high wattage (430W).

What are you guys' experiences with these newer psu's and ups units that don't have the pure sine wave? (I am also budget minded so I am not looking to buy a really expensive pure sine wave ups. I'd rather get the cheapest decent one that will get the job done, with the job being powering down the unraid server immediately and keeping the cell gateway online as long as possible)

Thanks

I'm using 3 APC 725 and have no problems. One of the systems uses a Corsair 430.

There is no such thing as a pure sine wave UPS. That is marketing BS. Expensive UPSs can produce a cleaner sine wave but your better off buying a different PSU and an inexpensive UPS.

I am using the APC ES 550, with a Corsair 600 (or maybe a 650?) supply and it works well, see:

I had a Corsair CX400 power supply but upgraded to the 600 so I could expand the number of drives.

We had some discussion of this potential issue of "messy output from a ups" here:

and I do not think this is an issue for modern computer power supplies.
