ESXi VM apps Vs Unraid Apps Question

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I'm currently investigating and slowly putting together an unraid build, and I've ordered a Supermicro X9SCM-IIF which I'm waiting to arrive. I'm wanting to be able to run a few apps such as sickbeard, couch potato, SABnzbd, Subsonic (or potentially plex), Mysql (For XBMC), and I'm just wondering whats the best way to do this as this will influence my CPU choice(either i3 or Xeon).

I've seen a few individuals with ESXi set ups install their apps on either linux or windows virtual machines rather than through unRaid and I'm just wondering what is the benefit in doing that?

I understand that you can use an ESXI virtual machine to be able to rip DVD/blurays and manage unraid content (e.g 3rd party scrapers) and other things, but apart from this are there any other benefits to running the apps I mentioned above in a VM rather than through unraid?

Cheers

Al

For me it keeps unRAID as an appliance.  I can setup VMs to do everything else I need.  Since I don't know linux that is good as I can use a Windows VM for anything that I would feel uncomfortable using the linux that unRAID is built on.

Leaving these applications on unRAID can potentially cause stability issues, I've had plugins not start properly, which prevented my array from starting.  That is something to consider.

That being said, I'm happily running a bunch of plugins on unRAID right now, even though unRAID is virtualized in ESXi.

I'm a little late to answer this..

I am the same as the other guys. it keeps my file server more stable and just that... a file server.
