Redstorm
Guys as per the thread title, I am haing trouble getting my server started and also with some plugins (SAB SB and CP) HARDWARE HP micro server N36L OS unRAID v5.0beta13 PLUGINS / EXTRAS simpleFeatures-0.9b-unraid-speeding_ant.tgz usenet_apps-0.2-i486-unRAID.tgz sysstat+unraid-0.0.06-i386-bubba.tgz istatd-0.5.6-noarch-1aj inadyn-0.98.1-noarch.1bw sabnzbd_unplugged.plg was sabnzbd-0.4c-i468-bw couchpotato_v2_unplugged was couchpotato-0.5-i468-bw sickbeard_unplugged was sickbeard-0.4a-i468-1bw headphones_unplugged PROBLEMS 1. When starting the array the web gui hangs and I can only unfreeze it by doing a ps aux and killing the start process for SAB SB or CP 2. There is a problem with my sudoers file - see log file attached Please someone help me with this. I am certain its something I have done previously that has screwed things up. Influencer
Ok, continuing here from the other thread... First of all, it is not good to run those three apps with the data directory set to /boot/config/. In fact, it is not good to have the data directory set to write to the flash drive at all. This will use up all the writes that flash drive can take, and in the case of these three apps, do so very quickly. If you have a plus or pro license, use the cache drive. This may be a possible cause of your problems, that the flash drive may be dying due to the number of writes and something may have been corrupted. Now that I'm home I'll review what's been done today and see if I can find anything else to try. Link to comment
Redstorm
First off i dont have a cache drive. Secondly do you really think my flash drive could have died in lass than a year? Link to comment
Influencer
With the amount of writes those three apps do its very possible. Especially Sab and cp Link to comment
Joe L.
First off i dont have a cache drive. Secondly do you really think my flash drive could have died in lass than a year? It can die in less than a week. The memory in most flash drives is limited to between 100,000 and 1,000,000 write cycles. If you write only once a minute, 100,000 minutes = 70 days. At 10 writes per minute, it can die in a week. Link to comment
MyKroFt
my Sab and CP never let my cache spin down - spin down is set to 30 min - so there is at least 1 write from one of them every 30 min or less..... Myk Link to comment
Influencer
Also, unless you specify an absolute path to a location off the flash drive, every time you download something with Sab it is being downloaded to the flash, extracted, then moved to its permanent location on the array. Considering the smallest file people typically download is around 300 mb, that's atleast 600 mb being written to for every download. If you have another flash drive is suggest installing unraid to it and seeing if your problem goes away. Do not assign any disks unless you are absolutely sure, if you assign a data disk as parity the data is gone. You can also run a checkdisk from windows on your unraid flash to see if it finds any problems. If you've been running those apps on the flash for a year its very possible you've got corruption. Redstorm
OK, so it seems I made a bit of a boo boo by using the flash drive to store my settings for those 3 apps. Well for the cost of a new flash drive I may as well just get a new one. Having only upgraded recently from the free version to unRAID plus, I am unfamiliar with the concept of the flash drive. I know that I havent got a physical one so if I have one would that not mean its a ram drive, which would prevent me using that for the data drive as it would be wiped and refreshed on each reboot.? Or are you suggesting that I put a phsical disk into my server to use as a cache drive? If this is the case, what about the 250gig drive that came with my microserver? Big enough? What other benefits will I see from using a cache drive? I only ask as real estate in my microserver is at a premium and i can only really squeeze one more disk in to the case before I ill need to start building box number two. But I am getting ahead f myself here. Back to the problem at hand. If I am going to get a new flash drive, should i copy across all my existing files or just start from scratch and install 5rc? Influencer
If you do not have a cache drive all files transferred to the server are written directly to the array, which is slower because parity has to be updated at the same time. If you use a cache drive, everything is stored on it until the mover script is ran, which does so automatically once a day. Since parity isn't updated when writing to the cache drive, transfers are faster. Most people also create cache only shares for apps like Sab, Sickbeard and cp. These stay on the cache drive which stops problems with the array never starting. The array will get stuck in a starting loop if apps are stored on the array, as the apps can sometimes start before the array, which keeps the disks busy, not allowing the array to start. The cache drive must be big enough to hold the typical amount you transfer to the array each day, if you transfer/download less than 250 GB a day, it is big enough. I use a 80 GB laptop drive as my cache. If I happen to transfer more than 80 GB I invoke the mover script manually from the webgui. Note that it isn't a guarantee that the flash drive is dying and that it is the cause of your problems, but as you stated, given the price of flash drives its possible and getting a new drive will atleast remove that from the possibilities. You will need to email limetech once you get the nee flash drive with the new GUID so he can send you a new key for it. Link to comment
