[SOLVED] Map to Top-Level of unRAID Server

Featured Replies

I can go into Windows Explorer and type the IP address of my unRAID server it it shows the top level - Disk1, Disk2, Share1, Share2, etc.  Also, I can map directly to a share by doing \\ip/name\sharename.

So I can put put these in Windows Explore and they work fine...

\\192.168.0.100 - brings up top level of unRAID and I can browse the disks and shares

\\192.168.0.100\movies - lets me browse just the movies share

However, if I go to map a network drive to assign a drive letter the first one does not work, the second one does.  Any reason why?

Thanks,

A little more information...  The same is also true if use the name instead of the IP address, so \\tower works by just typing it into the navigation bar of Windows explorer, but not if I put it into the "map network drive" dialog.

Thanks.

You map a drive to a share .

First one is not a share

2ND one is

Thanks for the quick response Nick.

So is there no way to map to the top level?  I find it strange that i can type the top level into the address bar but can't map to it.  Networking drives me nuts!  :'(

If you think about it \\SERVERNAME is the host

Anything under that is a share.

in windows you map to the share on a server.

hence no root.

the closest you could do.

is:

create a short cut to the root on your desktop.

Have a folder /library called unraid ,with symbolic links to the shares (this software here can help you create symbolic links http://code.google.com/p/symlinker/)

Symbolic links first appear as if they are short cuts, but they are a bit more powerful.

you can create a shortcut, but not map it as it is not a share.

I didn't even think of the shortcut option - that works perfect. Thanks for tip!
