First newbie question (I'm sure there will be more. lol)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm brand new to this whole thing. I've done lots of reading, but (as of now) I just have one question so far.

I want to preclear a new HDD on an old computer while I'm waiting for more hardware for my new unRAID I'm building to arrive. This older computer has this dual rail PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153052 and this MB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127181. I know the dual rail PSU is not recommended, but will it be okay to only do a preclear?

In other words, should this be safe to do the preclear only without blowing up my daughter's computer?  ;D

It will be safe as long as you choose the correct disk to clear (DO NOT CHOOSE HER HARD DISK, OR YOU WILL NOT BE HER FAVORITE PARENT)  Make sure you verify by the serial number/model number you have the correct disk.

DO NOT ASSIGN THE DISKS IN HER COMPUTER TO THE UNRAID ARRAY IN ANY WAY ON THE DISK ASSIGNMENT PAGE.  IT RE_WRITES THE MBR/PARTITION TABLE IMMEDIATELY.  That would be a second way for you to not be her favorite parent.

The multi-rail supply is only an issue if powering too many disks on a rail limited to 12 to 16 Amps or so.  A single rail in a multi-rail supply can usually handle 3 or 4 drives with no issue.  The issue is that the other rails are dedicated to PCIe cards or CPU, and not available to disks.

I lol'ed at your reply. Thanks!!

I will heed your warnings. In fact, to be safe I have unplugged her HDD completely. The only HDD that will be plugged in is the one that's going through the preclear.

Thanks again for the reply!

That should do it.

(Just do not shuffle your feet across the carpet prior to touching a hard disk, or the computer, zapping it with  static discharge.  Or work with it with the power applied, electrocuting yourself...)  Use a static discharge wriststrap if you have one when working on the chassis.

I'm sure you'll be fine.

Those would be the third and fourth ways to make one, or both of you very unhappy.
