August 6, 201213 yr Hi, Does unRAID have to be run from a flash drive or can it be installed on and run from any bootable HDD? I realise dedicating a whole HDD to this is a bit wasteful but we are considering unRAID for use with a server leased from 100TB with 12x3 TB HDDs and do not have the opportunity to use a flash drive there. Could we use 1HDD for unRAID, 1 for parity and 10 for data? Or are there more efficient ways of doing this? Thanks, Peter
August 6, 201213 yr do not have the opportunity to use a flash drive there. Without a flash drive or USB media reader with a unique GUID, there is no way to license unraid, so you would be stuck with the free version, and the limits imposed on it. Unraid can be installed to a hard drive, but the license is tied to a unique GUID read from USB.
August 6, 201213 yr As long as you have access to the machine, you can put an USB-device inside with one of those short internal-external-USB cables, if it can't be put on the outside.
August 6, 201213 yr I also don't know of many machines that don't have a USB. The SanDisk cruzer fit only stick out about 5mm, no bigger than those really small bluetooth adapters. This part doesn't make much sense without further details: "considering unRAID for use with a server leased from 100TB with 12x3 TB HDDs" Visualization or some sort of partitioning? I would recommend a bit more details.
