Maximum number of SATA power connectors on Seasonic X760

Featured Replies

My X760 PSU comes with 3 modular cables with a total of of 8 SATA power connectors. If i were to obtain some extra cables, how many outputs on the PSU can take such a cable? So how many SATA power connectors can I obtain with regular cables?

Good choice on the Seasonic!! I don't use anything but Seasonic anymore...never had one fail...  ;D8)

I don't own the X760, but....

how many outputs on the PSU can take such a cable?

My modular ones, (2) X650s & (2) X750s, all have 5 outputs for peripheral connections.

how many SATA power connectors can I obtain with regular cables?

None of my cables have over 3 SATA connectors... sooo... 15.

Hope that helps... YMMV!

Thanks. Was afraid of that. Just how to power a 24 disk server then? Without using splitters. Getting drive-cages?

Is there a reason you are against using splitters?

It's disrupting my cabling "tidyness" and overall reliability

I don't think you're going to get away from not splitting SATA power.

If you went with drive cages or a backpane setup (Norco 4224) you could tidy cables by making them yourself, but you're still splitting the power out.

Power != Analog Signals, as long as your wire gauge is thick enough 18awg or lower, you're not losing anything (like reliability) by splitting it.

It's disrupting my cabling "tidyness" and overall reliability

So cut off the connecting connectors on both the splitter cable and the power cable.  Solder the wires together and use heat shrink tubing on the solder joints.  Solves both the reliability problem and the tidyness issue.

I ordered a X-660 and have the same issue. Intended a 20 or 24 hdd setup.

I searched a bit and found http://www.moddiy.com/products/Antec-Modular-PSU-Single-Sleeved-5-x-SATA-Integrated-Cable.html

This way 5 connections times 5 cables is 25..

My hdd's

Deskstar 7K4000:                  startup: 1.2 (+5V) & 1.5 (+12V) (amps) = 14,4 Watt (5V) / 18 watt (12V)

                                            idle:  6.9 Watt

Deskstar HDT721010SLA360:  startup: 0.5 (+5V), 2.0 (+12V) = 6 Watt (5V) / 24 Watt (12V)

                                            idle: 5.2 watt

Samsung HD154UI:                startup: 2.0 A = 24 Watt

                                            idle: 5.1 Watt

Seagate ST2000DL003:          Startup: 2.1 A =  25.2 Watt

                                            idle: 4.5 Watt

Lets say 5 of each:

Deskstar 7K4000:                  7.5 A = 90 Watt

Deskstar HDT721010SLA360  10 A = 120 Watt

Samsung HD154UI:                10 A = 120 Watt

Seagate ST2000DL003:          10.5 A = 126 Watt

Some cable specs (no idea if this is correct info) http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html

That has 2 tables:

              Connector part numbers

Cable            connector Terminals                      Maximum current per circuit

Molex 67582-0000 Molex 67581-0000                        1.5 amps

              Official cable/connector maximum wattage delivery

Voltage rail      Number of lines            Maximum current            Maximum wattage

+3.3 volts          3                            4.5 amps                        14.85 watts

+5 volts            3                              4.5 amps                        22.5 watts

+12 volts            3                            4.5 amps                        54 watts

I assume the 1.5 amps is per line in the connector, and there are 3 * 3.3v, 3 * 5 v and 3 * 12 v lines in a sata power connector.

It does not seem wise to split 1 sata power into 3, 4 or 5 other sata power, than you could overload the originating connector.

With the 6 pin to 5 SATA power (the link above) over AWG 18 wire, the wire seems to be the limit, as each drive take only what it needs via the connector from the wire.

Hard for me to understand the specs for AWG wire, but here is a table: http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm

With google i find 6 - 9 Amp for longer runs. But also 16-20 Amp so i am lost here.

9 Amp would be not enough for 5 times a average drive..

Any comments ?

I did send a e-mail to that company which makes these cables (the links in my posts)

I got an answer in 30 minutes (my evening is their very early morning i think)

They will make this cable to your specifications for that price.

So you have to tell them the powersupply you use, and the space between the connectors if different than 30 mm.

You can also get it in the colour you want.
