renaming files while they are on the cache drive... bad idea?

Featured Replies

My server crashed last night & I'm trying to figure out why.  I was moving some files around and renaming some others when writes became very very very slow (more then a minute to change a file name).  About an hour after this happened I was streaming something and had lots of buffering (which has never happened before).  When I tried to check the server I couldn't access the web interface nor could I telnet to the console.  The shares were still accessible so I used filezilla to ftp the movie I wanted to watch to my htpc and left the server alone.  A couple of hours after that I still couldn't access the server but a couple of the drive lights were still flashing so I figured it was doing something.  I left it running.  In the morning the drive lights were out but I still couldn't access the server so I turned off the power.  After powering up everything looks file.

Two questions:

1) what can I check to try to figure out what happened?

2) The renaming & moving I was doing was to files that were likely on the cache drive.  Is that a bad idea (ie, should I run MOVER before doing any file access)?

Thanks in advance.

1) use the telnet-tail method to capture the syslog before/during an event. See here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=9880.0

2) This is not an issue.

1) I'll have a look at that, thanks.

2) too bad.  Glad it's not an issue but hoped I had found my problem.

The trouble with the first suggestion is that I couldn't telnet into my server.  I really wish there was a way to have the syslog written to my flashdrive so I'd have something to look at after a crash.
