Cache Drive - spinner or SSD

Featured Replies

My current Cache drive has failed and it's time to replace it.

I'm using the Cache drive as the home of the external apps... CP, SAB, etc.  I've got custom post processing scripts that move the completed files to the raid protected shares so I don't use the Unraid built-in mover at all.

I'm waffling between replacing it with a SSD or a standard HD.  Then throwing in the option of a hybrid drive, WD Black, laptop drive, etc., it all gets pretty confusing.  Not sure if the speed of the SSD is really needed and although the prices seem to have come down, just not sure that's the way to go.

Any suggestions?

You haven't enabled use cache disk in share settings? Because then downloads from from SAB will stay on the cache disk until the mover kicks in.

I would only use an SSD if you want immediate access and do not want a spinning drive 24x7.

I plan to use an SSD but only because I use unRAID as my file server and I want to use part of the SSD as my /homes area.

For that I want immediate access without 24x7 spinning.

I do like hybrid drives, so if you need more space and a cost effective way of adding speed, it's a great product.

However, if I had a drive just laying around unused without a spinning or speed requirement, I would just use that.

Dikkie...  No, the 'use cache disk' is not enabled.  The post processing script does the moving.

Having the disk spinning 24x7 isn't that big of a deal, pretty low power usage, etc.  I had used a 'drive I had laying around' but that drive has failed, or at least I can no longer write to it.  It passes preclear with flying colors, but when i write to it Unraid starts throwing errors.

Could you share that post processing script? And how to set it up? Does it work with SAB only? I like to experiment with it.

Sure, I can do that.  It does some post processing of the MKV file, specifically stripping out unwanted subtitles and audio streams.

I'll try and get it posted tonight along with all the required libs and associated files.
