September 23, 201213 yr I have an Asus MB with an Athlon X2 for unraid, and it has six SATA3 ports onboard. I have a single five-drive cage installed, and plan on running a cache drive, a parity drive, and four data drives to start. At some point I will add a second, and then third, five-drive cage, so I will have a total of 16 drives in the system. I'm concerned about the onboard SATA ports competing for bandwidth on the system bus. I am wondering if I shouldn't just get an 8-port Supermicro PCIe controller now, and run everything off it? And then add a second one later. Which config is likely to offer me the best performance? Thanks.
September 23, 201213 yr On board SATA ports are almost always faster than a fully populated Supermicro SASLP. SAS2LP has enough bandwidth that it will not make a difference.
