October 11, 201213 yr I need to add more drives so I have to swap out my 2-port controllers. I also have PCI slots available, are they much slower? What 4-port PCI-e Sata cards are recommended? or 2/4 port PCI cards? Write speed is important to me, should I be looking only at Sata III options, or is Sata II good enough, will I see a difference?
October 11, 201213 yr I have used the Rosewill RC-218 4 port PCIe card with success. It's currently out of stock on newegg. Although the price was around $59 when I purchased it many moons ago. The difference between PCI and PCIe for 4 port cards will be most evident when using multiple disks simultaneously. I.E. writes/reads and moves along with parity generate/syncs. For single filesystem reads you'll hardly notice the difference. SATA II is good enough. With the current technology I doubt you will notice the difference from SATA II and SATA III unless you use a SSD.
October 11, 201213 yr Author That one does look like a candidate. Anyone use the SYBA SY-PEX40016? it is a 5 sata + 1 esata for $80 on newegg canada.

I believe they are hybrid sata/pata with a port multiplier on them. I ended up ordering a Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 You're better off with this one anyway!
