Cache drive question

Featured Replies

Alright, so I have a question about how the cache drive works. I have my parity drive, 4 data drives, and a cache drive. On my "Movies" share I had two Batman movies and decided to make a folder for them. So I created a Batman folder and moved the two files into that folder. Now the shares page says my "Movies" share has pending cache. Is this how the cache drive is supposed to work? Do any changes to your data drives (whether it be downloading a new file or just renaming/moving around current files) have to go through the cache drive?

Did you copy or move? A move will stay on the same array disk and go very quickly.

The cache drive is only used for new file writes or writes to the cache disk share.

Using SMB, I created a new folder 'Batman' in my Movies share. I then moved the two .mkv files from the Movies share into the 'Batman' folder. So I guess I moved them.

I just tried this. You will have an empty Batman directory on the cache drives. The movies themselves will have stayed on the drive they were on before the move. That empty Batman directory will make it show that files exist on the cache.

Alright, so because I was creating a new folder, that's the only thing that was on the cache drive. Makes sense now. Thanks!
