Split level 5

I've just logged into my unRaid server and was messing with the shares and realized that my split level was set to 5 on every one. I've tried reading the wiki, but for some reason I cannot grasp the idea of split level  :o. Is having a split level of 5 detrimental in any way? If so, can I change it now or only when I create a new share?
