SOLVED network look up in XP

Featured Replies

I have the XP machine hooked up (wired) but i cant get the unRaid server to pop up under networks. On my W7 laptop (wireless...but don't think it has anything to do with it) it shows up under network ?

Is your XP machine in the same workgroup as the server?

Does the XP machine show up on the Windows 7 machine under networks?

Have you setup SMB (under 'Settings') to allow the server to become the 'Local Master'?  For this to be most effective, it is necessary to always leave the server on.  (The Local Master is the "DNS" server for the SMB network.  The Local Master is determined by an 'election' process when there is no Local Master on the network.  That is why you want to leave your server on and allow it to become the Local Master.)

You can also try shutting down the XP machine for couple of minutes.  Then restart it and go out for a cup of coffee.  (It can take Windows more than half hour at times to completely resolve all of the computers on a network.  :-\  It does seem to get better as time goes on--- maybe! [Occasionally, I have one Win7 computer that refuses to show up until I reboot it.]  )

Can you access your Win7 from the XP machine?

Has the XP machine ever been setup as a part of a peer-to-peer network?  The reason that I ask this (as I recall-- since it has been well over seven years since I last set up XP machine for peer-to-peer) is that I believe you must check that all of the components necessary are installed and enabled for peer-to-peer to work.  (In fact, I don't believe that they are automatically installed in a stock install of XP.)

Looking at one of my resources, you need to look at the "Local Area Connection Properties" dialog box. Click on the 'General' tab.  Check to see that the 'Client for Microsoft Networks', 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, 'QoS Packet Scheduler' and 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' are are installed and enabled by checking the check box.

Sorry, I not longer have an XP machine to provide you with more specific directions to get to the dialog boxes.

I love moments where all of a sudden it just worked..(sigh)

Thanks!

It happens much, much more than it should with MS peer-to-peer.  One minute is broke and nothing seems to fix it and then, suddenly, without anything being done (Besides cursing at the thing), it starts working.  Glad to hear your experience  was one of these cases.
