Server loud and temps too high, ideas?

Featured Replies

I'm using a Aerocool VS-9 and have one 120mm fan on the top and one 120mm fan on the back, plus the PSU exhaust fan. I have removed the 80mm fans from the iStarUSA 5x3 cages as they're super loud. The server is still very loud, and during a summer parity check temps get too high for my liking. And I only have 6 drives in the server too. I do have all nine 5.25" bays full of 5x3 cages. What can I do? The 80mm fans on the cages are non-standard 20mm thick where standard 80mm fans are 25mm thick so finding them is difficult, and finding quiet ones is nearly impossible. What about the Noctua Pressure Optimized 120mm fans? Is having both 120mm exhaust fans right next to each other at a 90 degree angle causing more noise?

Need to make sure the air is pulled over the drives,  so make sure any other grills are covered so the air has to go the way you want it too.

CPU fans and cheap PSU's can be very noisy.  You can isolate the noise by stopping each fan with your finger..... but be aware this might shut box down / make beeping noises etc....  Some bioses have fan failure protection especially for CPU's....

I would make sure all side ports are blocked with say some Black Construction paper or whatever you can stand to look at. ;)

On my CoolerMaster 590 I have 3 fans running at 7volts so they run a bit slower, 1 fan in the back as well as my PSU fan and all my drives sit around 25-27C all year round.
