One critical note - I moved this drive from another machine, and it's been running just fine for at least a year. However, when I went to plug in the SATA cable to the back of it, I discovered that the plastic that backs the 5 pins was missing. I wrapped a long twist tie around the SATA plug, then very carefully plugged it in. I gently pulled the ends of the twist tie up, bent them over the top of the drive and taped them down, thus holding the plug in place. I just took a look, and it appears that the plug may have slipped off a bit (maybe the heat loosened the duct tape holding the twist tie down).

1) Anyone see anything wrong in the SMART report indicating the drive is, indeed toast?

2) How the heck could that plastic have broken off? I'm a techie guy, not a ham-fisted mechanic, I pull cables gently...

3) Is there any chance my ghetto fixing has a chance of working? (I did set pre-clear to run for 3 cycles, specifically to stress test the drive with this fix, since I figured it was pretty sketchy to begin with.)

I have another 2TB drive pre-clearing right now, so I'm not going to power anything down to check cables just yet, but I'll keep tabs on all suggestions and try them out as soon as it's done.

TIA!

Not really, its a used drive, thats visible... fix the connection and try again.

And ofcourse its your party: but I would not trust my data with such a frankenstein-disk ;-)

After a bit of fiddling to test out a different controller, then putting the system back the way it was, it's not even recognizing this drive any more. I believe it's toast. :(

Thanks for listening.  Good news is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1193162&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL012213&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL012213-_-EMC-012213-Index-_-Combo-_-Combo1193162-LM2A is on its way!

Hard to beat a 2GB WD Green EARX and a HighPoint Rocket 620 for $99 after rebate!!
