January 30, 201313 yr The thought of having my media stream to my PS3 is fairly new to me. I've had an unRaid server for some time and it works great. I'm currently on 4.7 and I'm very happy with how it is performing. I also have sabnzbd, sickbeard, and couchpotato operating just the way I want. So I'm not exactly anxious to move to 5.0 yet. The only thing that has me considering it is the plug-in for ps3mediaserver and Plex, which I believe will both allow my PS3 to play my media located on my unRaid server. So for those that have already been down this road I would like to ask which is better for the PS3? Is one perhaps easier to install with unRaid 4.7 than the other? I've seen a few guides for installing ps3mediaserver, but it is very difficult to tell, which process might be best. Admittedly, I'm pretty slow when it comes to Linux.
January 30, 201313 yr Personally I like Plex, but it may be overkill for you if you're just watching media on the PS3. Where Plex really shines is in the availability of your media on multiple clients--even away from home, sharing your library with friends/family, the organization/metadata, etc. You should know, however, that the PS3 has Cinavia copyright protection built-in, so you'll find it may stop playing some of your media (legitimately ripped or otherwise) that has that protection scheme embedded in the video/audio. Edit: I should add, if you like your 4.7 setup, maybe the easiest route to go is grab a hardware player (WDTV, AIOS, Popcorn Hour, etc.). It will decode the vast majority of media you throw at it, can connect directly to your unRAID media shares, and doesn't require transcoding the media, as it likely would to the PS3.
January 31, 201313 yr Author Great information. I have a Popcorn Hour (love it) and I did have a WDTV (did not love it). I just happen to have a PS3 connected to our living room TV and I would rather not clutter up the area with another box. Any idea which is easier to install with unRaid 4.7?
