March 10, 201313 yr Hi all. I come to you as a complete newbie in all things Linux, but unRaid looks to be the way to go. I [think] I have my system setup (2x2TB) data drives and a 2TB parity. It is hooked up to the network with all green lights. As a test, I dragged and dropped a movie file from within win7 explorer onto the video folder I had setup in the share section of unRaid. I have no experience using Linux command lines so thought this may be an easy way out. As I understood it, the file should have been written to one of the drives. It transferred at a slow 800kb/s , least of my problems for the moment. As a means of streaming my media to the TV, I use tVersity via a PS3. This has been fine in the past, but now tversity sees the video folder on the unRaid tower but refuses to appear on the TV for playback. My questions are: Have I set this up right for a start? syslog and screen attached Does the old windows drag and drop work? Is there a faster method of transferring the files? Connecting a removable HD via usb to the server box didn't show up at all even though usb is enabled in the Bios. I set up PuTTY to access the unRaid server as it has no screen or keyboard attached. Looking forward to any replies. Logan syslog.zip
March 10, 201313 yr On the settings page, click on 'SMB'. Is the Workgroup set to match what you are using on both your win7 computer and PS3? Is 'Enable SMB' set to yes? ====== On the 'Shares' page, left click on your Share Name (it should be in blue). Scroll down the page to the 'SMB Security Settings'. Be sure that the 'Export' is set to 'Yes'. Be sure that the Security is set to 'Public'. Oh, and don't forget to click on 'Apply' for all sections that you change....
March 10, 201313 yr Author All that you have suggested has been applied. I'm guessing the sharing is working, as I can see the tower setup in the windows network.
March 10, 201313 yr All that you have suggested has been applied. I'm guessing the sharing is working, as I can see the tower setup in the windows network. Starting from this point, you should be able to click your way down to the file inside of the folder. Try double clicking on the file and see if Windows has an application to play it. (Even if it doesn't, you will know that the file is on the server and you can access it-- at least, from your Win7 machine. If this is the case, your problem is now how to get the PS3 and the software installed there to access your new server.
March 10, 201313 yr It transferred at a slow 800kb/s ... Check what speed your network connection is. In a PuTTY console, type the command "ethtool eth0". Part way down, you will see the speed of the current connection displayed, hopefully "Speed: 1000 Mb/s" for a gigabit connection. I suspect you will find 100 Mb/s which is not gigabit, and you will have to diagnose why it's not. Connecting a removable HD via usb to the server box didn't show up at all even though usb is enabled in the Bios. On the USB ports, it found both your Sandisk Cruzer flash drive (sde) and a WD 750GB drive (sdd). UnRAID does not currently support array drives on USB. With Linux console commands, you can mount and copy or move files to the WD drive, as sdd, but it does require some Linux knowledge. Some of the UnRAID wiki how-to's may help. To make the drive visible to external computers requires more knowledge. If that is important, others may be able to help. Do look into the SNAP addon, should help you.
March 12, 201313 yr Author Hi, You were right, only a 100mb connection. Although 1000 is supported. Something else to work on! It seems that after a parity check, all of my newly transferred data is present on the unRaid server and accessable thru my present media streaming setup. How though do I actually see what is on the unRaid server? I can see that drive 1 is the only one being written to at the moment, but then again I have only moved about 100Gb of data across.
March 12, 201313 yr In Windows Explorer type "\\YourTower'sIP" in the address bar. That should show you all your disks, shares as well as flash drives. Which disk gets filled how much and in what order depending on your allocation method, included/ excluded disks etc chosen in the particular share's settings. For instance, with 2TB drives and high-water allocation method you would need to fill up atleast 1TB on the drive currently being written to until unRAID starts writing to the second data disk.
