[Solved] UnRaid processor

Featured Replies

I am about to take the plunge and buy the version of UnRaid that takes the highest amount of drives. My case currently supports 19 drives and I have plenty of drives ranging from 1tb - 2tb I can use to fill it up. My question is on processor and memory requirements. I would rather not use one of my high end processors and mlb for this. I was going to just order something low key from Newegg.

Would something like this be sufficient http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116409

Would I pay in the end for not going i3 or higher ? I am trying to keep the cost down because of other things I will need to upgrade my vSphere server so cost are an aspect on getting this project done.

Also for the amount of drives I have what is enough ram 4gb, 8gb or 12gb ++ ?

the G530 will be fine and 4GB of RAM is enough for unRAID.

The latter is true for stock unraid, but, then you have to start considering plugins/etc.

I had G530 for the longest time until I got the esxi machine set up.

G530 is enough for all plugin including plex

Agreed depending on plugins what you need will change. In my largest server I run 4gb ram and an Intel Pentium g2020. This is more than enough for my system because I barely have plugins. I only run mysql, apcups, simple features, and drive mount.

That should be enough.  I only run Airvideo to my ipads and iphone, and it can transcode a high bitrate video via wireless to my iOS devices without any issues.  I use a AMD dual core.  It starts having issues with I try to stream and transcode two or more movies at once.

I will go higher end on the MLB also, just because I want a really good MLB with multiple PCIe x16 slots.

Also does anyone have any experience with this card http://www.wiredzone.com/productdesc.aspx?code=10018973&type=0 in UnRaid? I know when I tried the latest flavor of OpenSolaris it did not pick up this controller.

A lot of unraid users use that card. They refer it as 'MV8'. I use it myself.

It is also listed in the hardware compatibility list in wiki : http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Hardware_Compatibility#PCI_SATA_Controllers

I use the MV8. I've bought two of th thinking I was going to need to, but my current MOBO is limited to only one.

I was thinking of either selling it or try to trade it for a Norco SS500.
